Charleston, South Carolina, is an exciting place to live, with lots to offer both visitors and new residents. One of the best things about this city is how walkable it is, so there’s plenty you can enjoy by foot if you don’t have a car or just want to get some exercise.

Keep reading for a list of the eight must-see spots to check out while walking around Charleston:

1. Charleston City Market

Charleston City Market

Famous across the U.S., the Historic Charleston City Market is four blocks long, starting at Market Hall and extending out from there. Market Hall is a historic building dating back to the 1700s, so it’s definitely worth a look in and of itself. Sprawling across so many blocks, Charleston’s City Market is a great spot for people-watching, shopping at various stalls, and picking out gifts and souvenirs.

2. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Near the Ashley River, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is one of the oldest plantations and landscaped gardens in the U.S., offering beautiful sights and historical significance. Populated with flowering trees and blooming azaleas, Magnolia Plantation’s gardens are a great spot if you’re looking for some peace and relaxation.

3. Fort Sumter National Monument

Dating back to the War of 1812, Fort Sumter plays a major role in American history. This fort was the site of the first battle in the Civil War, where it was left in ruins. If you’re a history buff, this storied national monument is worth a visit.

4. Ravenel Waterfront Park

Stretching eight acres, Ravenel Waterfront Park is a popular spot with tourists and locals alike, having won several awards for its design. Ravenel Waterfront Park features a large, famous fountain at the heart and has a pier and benches to sit and people-watch from. Kids and adults alike will appreciate Ravenel Waterfront Park’s wide, open spaces.
