Whether you’re thinking about moving to Tampa or have just taken the plunge, you’ll be pleased to know that this city hosts plenty of attractions that can match practically any taste. And while this coastal area is known for its gorgeous beaches and fun water activities, Tampa does offer much more than just its sun and sand.

Here are some of the top attractions in Tampa that new residents can’t miss:

Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens, an Africa-themed amusement park, is the most famous attraction in the area and is known for its wide selection of rides and animal exhibits. Tampa houses the original Busch Gardens park, which predates even Disney World! Feeling daring? SheiKra, the first-ever dive coaster, is still considered one of the best roller coasters in the country, so be sure to give it a try!

The park doubles as Tampa’s largest zoo, even beating out the zoo at Lowry Park. Most famous is the Edge of Africa exhibit, where visitors can observe African animals such as lions, Nile crocodiles, hippos, lemurs, and more. The site also boasts a free-flight bird garden with over 500 tropical species. It even has a viewable animal care center where you can watch animals receive medical treatments!

The Florida Aquarium

Florida Aquarium

If you’re more interested in sea life, The Florida Aquarium is a must-visit. This nonprofit organization is considered a leader in wildlife conservation and education, and all the animals there are deeply cared for. There are over 9,000 species in the aquarium, and some of the most famous include the coral reef community, the simulated beach, and the wetlands trail. You can even sign up for experiences like a wild dolphin cruise and behind-the-scenes VIP access.

Tampa History Cruise

If you’re a history buff—or just like to be on the water!—there’s no better attraction than a Tampa History Cruise. Tampa’s water taxis transport you across the harbor, so you can see the pirate ship Gabriella, some of Tampa’s most stunning homes and museums, and even the famous “plant hotel,” a Victorian-themed plant museum. Commentary throughout the cruise gives you great details about Tampa’s history, and good news: Refreshments are provided.

Tampa Theatre

Tampa Theatre

The Tampa Theatre is a famous historic landmark in Downtown Tampa that can’t be missed. It’s the only nonprofit movie palace in the area, and it shows a wide range of foreign films and documentaries. Even if you aren’t there for the arts, it’s still worth a visit for the architecture and history alone. There is a 90-minute tour that walks you through the entire complex and details the fascinating history and renovations of the building.

These attractions just scratch the surface of everything Tampa has to offer, but if you’re moving to Tampa, they’re a great way to start exploring your new city.
