Los Angeles is a popular destination for many young professionals, whether they’re moving to pursue their dreams of stardom in Hollywood or are interested in being close to the many tech jobs, beautiful beaches, and great restaurants on the West Coast.

That being said, living in the City of Angels can be quite expensive, so you’ll need to have a few tips and tricks up your sleeve if you want to maximize your budget. Whether you’re moving to LA for work or school, here are a few things to keep in mind to find the best Los Angeles apartments for you.

Consider your interests

Living in LA

One of the first things you should think about when you’re planning a move to Los Angeles is what you typically like to do in a given week and how you generally spend your free time. For example, if you’re pursuing a career as an actor, easy access to the freeway—and gigs!—might be important to you. On the other hand, if you like to surf, you may prefer to live near Hermosa Beach.

Similarly, if you’re moving to Los Angeles to attend the University of California or the University of Southern California, you probably want to live someplace close to campus to avoid a long hike to class.

Love LA nightlife? Then downtown Los Angeles is the place to be, since you’ll be within walking distance to all the action.

Think about location

Moving to Los Angeles

Los Angeles is composed of dozens of neighborhoods, which means there’s something for everyone—if you know where to look. Downtown Los Angeles is great, but don’t feel limited to that location if you’re interested in a different neighborhood. The vibes from places like Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, West Hollywood (WeHo), Chinatown, and Koreatown are very different from downtown LA, so it’s worth considering these areas if you’re striking out trying to stick to Los Angeles proper.

Look for a home or apartment that checks a lot of boxes

Whether you’re looking in Santa Monica or downtown LA, sometimes it makes sense to go with a fully furnished apartment that will check other boxes than other homes you tour. If you’re the type of person who will take advantage of extra amenities like a swimming pool or fitness center, you can save a ton of money by having these features in-house.

The same can be said for public areas like courtyards or patios—if you’re a social individual, this is a great way to make friends in your new city. Or, if you want a slice of the outdoors to yourself, look for apartment buildings that offer private balconies.
