How the Miami Marlins saved 40% on their Minor League housing costs while delivering a premier housing experience

Overview

In 2021, Major League Baseball announced a new Minor League Housing Policy that would provide housing for over 90% of Minor League players. Starting in 2022, each MLB team started providing furnished housing accommodations for players on their Minor League affiliated teams.

The Opportunity

Each MLB team was now responsible for providing furnished housing accommodations for over 150 Minor League players across multiple teams and cities. The Miami Marlins, along with all MLB clubs now faced a number of challenges.

Increased expenses related to rent and furnishings

Increased headcount and time spent to coordinate and provide housing

Ensuring a quality housing experience for their players

The Results

The Miami Marlins partnered with Landing to house players on their Triple-A affiliate team. In total, Landing housed over 40 players on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp throughout the ’22 season. The Marlins provided Landing with a list of players and reservation dates, and Landing handled creating reservations for the club. With Landing, the Marlins streamlined their reservation process, provided high quality housing for their Minor League players, and saved on housing expenses.

Compared to monthly player housing expenses of their Single-A affiliate, the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlins saved 43% on monthly housing costs with Landing. Landing also conducted NPS surveys of Jumbo Shrimp players and random Minor League players. Players that lived with Landing had an NPS 135 points higher than that of the average Minor Leaguer surveyed. The Jumbo Shrimp players that lived with Landing had an NPS of 91 compared to the -44 observed in Landing’s survey of Minor League players.
