Austin Neighborhood Guide: Mueller
If you’re looking for an apartment for rent in Austin, TX, you’re likely trying to figure out the best neighborhoods in Austin, and which one would be the right fit for you. Mueller, a modern development built in 2007 off of what used to be Austin’s Robert Mueller Airport, is a family-friendly community with grocery stores, parks, and schools all within walking distance. This neighborhood is only four miles from downtown Austin, yet you can enjoy its quieter vibe, brand-new apartment buildings, and great retailers.
Thinking about renting an apartment in Mueller? Here’s our guide to the best restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, outdoor attractions, gyms, nightlife, and transportation in this Texas community.
Where to go out to eat
For Korean-inspired barbecue, hit up Chi’lantro, which is known for its mind-blowing kimchi fries and tasty tacos. This hip spot also has wraps, bowls, and Korean fried chicken beloved by residents.
Xian Sushi and Noodle is another popular eatery among Mueller residents, serving hand-pulled Chinese noodles and their signature sushi rolls. We definitely recommend trying the sesame balls!
In the mood for a treat? Head over to Tiff’s Treats, a beloved cookie delivery shop in the Mueller area. The salted caramel brownie with vanilla ice cream will blow your mind, and you can’t leave without trying their delightful chocolate chip cookie truffles.
Where to get groceries
If you’re moving to the Mueller area, you’ll want to grab your groceries at the nearby H.E.B. grocery store. You can also pick up fresh produce at the Texas Farmers Market at Mueller, which has been voted the best farmer’s market in all of Austin by residents. Mosaic Market sells specialty groceries in addition to wine, beer, and Boar’s Head sandwiches.
Where to get coffee
There’s no shortage of spots in the Mueller area to get your caffeine fix. Streamway Coffee is a food trailer in the Mueller Trailer Eats food truck park that serves locally roasted specialty coffee, complete with beautiful latte art!
If you want some coffee with a bit of a zing, check out Halcyon and its famous caffeinated cocktails. Try the Voodoo Lady with chai tea, rum, and Cafe de Fuego liqueur, or dare to imbibe on the Long Island Iced Coffee (which is rightfully limited to one per guest!).
Kerbey Lane has all your coffee classics, along with hearty breakfast favorites such as chicken and pancakes, chilaquiles, and breakfast tacos that Austinites love.
Outdoor attractions
Mueller is surrounded by gorgeous green space perfect for getting your nature fix. Mueller Lake Park is a great spot to spend the afternoon if you want to lounge by the lake or have a picnic. Want to get a workout in? There are 30 acres of Mueller Lake Park to explore, whether you want to check out its public art installations or hike and bike along its five-mile loop trail
The area is also home to Patterson Neighborhood Park, which has a community garden, a pool, and even a playground for the kids to enjoy. You can also get some exercise in the park by playing tennis, basketball, or volleyball.
Located near the Mueller retail center is the Northwest Greenway, a perfect park to hike and bike—or, if you’re looking for a calmer day, have a picnic!
Local gyms
Working up a sweat in Mueller is easy, with gym options such as OrangeTheory Fitness, and TrainLifeFit in the area. If you’re a yogi, you can also visit Ashtanga Yoga Austin and Yoga East Austin (even if you’re just there for the Savasana—you do you!).
It might even be possible to work out without having to join a gym. If you’re looking to rent an apartment, many Austin apartments offer onsite fitness centers and even pools. Be on the lookout as you browse apartment listings and floor plans, since an in-home gym can save you a ton of money in gym membership fees.
Nightlife
If you’re living in Mueller, TX, you’ll quickly learn about Barrel O’ Fun, a carnival-themed bar with an impressive craft beer selection, specialty cocktails (and adult shakes!), along with live music, comedy, and more types of performances to enjoy. The place is family-friendly during the day, but once evening rolls around, the “R-E-L” on their sign fritzes out and the space becomes the “Bar O’ Fun.”
For a chill night filled with good friends and even better beer, visit B.D. Riley, an Irish pub with a pet-friendly patio and TVs you can watch your favorite game on. Be sure to try the Fish n’ Chips!
Bobo’s Snack Bar, a community tasting room, is all about keeping things local, with cocktails made from local spirits and Texas-made beer and wine. We love a great community-based bar!
If you’re a movie buff, you’ll love spending an evening at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Mueller on Aldrich Street, where you can pair your flicks with delicious cocktails and craft beers (an Oscar-winning combination!).

One major attraction in Mueller is The Thinkery, a hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) experience that’s popular among kids of all ages. This spot was known as the Austin Children’s Museum up until a few years ago.
